Growing up in church I was told the story of Martha and Mary (Lk. 10:38-42) many times. Each time, the theme was the same, "Connie, be sure not to get so busy doing service that you miss Jesus." Not a bad theme, but somehow in my reading of the text I had missed an intriguing component of this encounter between Jesus and the two sisters.
Culturally, women in Jesus' day had specific roles of childrearing, house-keeping and the like. Most women could not read and were not encouraged to study (such as why women were limited in the church). To take a closer look then at this simple five-verse-narrative we see not just the importance of watching for Jesus in our lives, but we also discover Jesus' affirmation of Mary in a place in the house contrary to the cultural norms of his day.
So often in my mind's eye I picture Mary starry-eyed, gazing at this holy teacher- much like the daydreaming girls infatuated with the Harrison Ford character in Indiana Jones. Instead, we need to see Mary as a student of Jesus; learning from His Words, growing as a disciple and leader.
Jesus’ response, then, to Martha’s annoyance of her sister is the affirmation that Mary is where she needs to be – learning at the feet of her Teacher. While the demands upon us by our family, career and life are great, learning about the Kingdom of God and taking time to grow in our faith is of utmost importance and encouraged by Jesus Himself.
Come to Jesus. Sit a while. Learn and Grow. You are welcomed here.

Our Women’s Ministry Purpose is to connect women to one another and to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ. It is through Jesus where we find our identity as daughters of God and it is in community where we work out our identity as we grow in our faith to build up the body of Christ through our works of service, love and leadership.
Our Strategy: We first provide opportunities for women to connect with one another through social events. As we become more comfortable with one another, we challenge women to take a step toward growing in her faith through Bible studies, retreats and seminars. Service is a natural by-product of a life connected to Jesus. Service and leadership to our church family and in our community pushes us out of our comfort zone and into a place where we rely on God to work through us to better our communities.
Our Goal is for all ladies to know they are loved by our Heavenly Father, to step into the saving grace of Christ Jesus our Lord, and to experience the life of the Spirit in our daily living.
Please let us know how we can pray for you, help you connect to others & study God’s word together.
